A Different Energy

It is constantly amazing to me how two shows in the same theatrical space can be so completely different. This summer I worked on The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abrigdged) and A Midsummer Night's Dream in Pennsylvania. I absolutely loved the first show, enjoying every moment that I spend in rehearsal. The second show, however, made me want to poke my eyes out and stuff them in my ears. And yet they rehearsed in the same place, performed in the same place.
Opus and Speech & Debate are similar. The two shows are so different in style, in content, in energy, and yet, unlike this summer, I love both of them equally. Opus had a more serious feel, with older actors, and a more cerebral approach. Speech & Debate is all about play. The cast is younger, and the rehearsals are structured around playing to find what works.
One approach isn't better than the other, they are merely different. And they are equally fantastic. As I continue in the process of rehearsal for Speech & Debate, I look forward to seeing what awaits me as I work on Fences and how that energy differs from the two I've experienced so far.
